- Effects of Thinning and Fertilizing Mixed Western Hemlock-Sitka Spruce Stands.
http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hre/pubs/pubs/0313.htm
Limited information exists on the growth and yield of young mixed western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla) and Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) stands on the Queen Charlotte Islands following pre-commercial thinning and fertilization. As a result, research into thinning and fertilization was initiated by the South Moresby Forest Replacement Account research committee. Our research project (Experimental Project [EP] 1097), conducted on Graham Island, investigates tree and stand growth responses to thinning and nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization in young Sitka spruce-western hemlock stands. In this extension note, we describe this project, present the 5-year response results taken from remeasurements after the 1996 growing season, and offer some preliminary conclusions. ...

- Net Basal Area Response 9 Years after Fertilizing Thinned and Unthinned Douglas-fir.
http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hre/pubs/pubs/1183.htm
Equations to estimate net basal area response of Douglas-fir to nitrogen fertilization in terms of initial stand attributes were developed, based on remeasurement data over a period of 9 years from 176 plots (0.05- 0.10 ha in size) of the British Columbia Forest Productivity Committee study. The data suggest that, in the slightly dry, nutrient-poor to medium sites in the CWHxm1 subzone on Vancouver Island, fertilizing immature Douglas-fir stands has several effects: On the average, it results in a stand net basal area cumulative response of about 5% (2.0 m2 /ha) in the unthinned stands, and about 7% (3.2 m2 /ha) in the thinned stands, after 9 years with a single application of 225 kg N/ha. Doubling the fertilizer dosage from 225 kg N/ha to 450 kg N/ha on the average increased stand net basal area relative response 1.5-fold to about 11% in the thinned stands, but had no effect on the unthinned-stand response, after 9 years. Net basal area annual response dissipates wit ...

- Effects of Thinning and Fertilizing Mixed Western Hemlock-Sitka Spruce Stands.
http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hre/pubs/pubs/1225.htm
The objective of this thinning and fertilization experiment (Experimental Project [EP] 1097) was to investigate tree and stand growth responses to thinning, and to nitrogen and phosphorus fertilization in a mixed western hemlock-Sitka spruce ecosystem in the Queen Charlotte Islands, British Columbia. The experiment was established before the 1991 growing season. This report presents the 5-year response from remeasurements taken after the 1996 growing season. Two different fertilization levels (no application; application of 250 kgN/ha + 100kgP/ha) and five different thinning levels (no thinning; thin to 1600, 1200, 800, or 400 stems per hectare) were used in an incomplete factorial experiment in a completely randomized block design. Thinning improved diameter growth for hemlock and spruce. Individual tree height was generally not affected by thinning; however, trees in the lowest diameter class grew faster. On average, trees in thinned plots were larger in diameter, slightly taller, and grew faster in ...

- Comparing the Effects of Urea and Ammonium Nitrate Fertilizers on the Growth and Foliar Nutrition of Lodgepole Pine: 6-year Results.
http://www.for.gov.bc.ca/hre/pubs/pubs/1415.htm
The 6-year effects of urea (46-0-0) and ammonium nitrate (AN; 34-0-0) fertilizers, applied alone and in combination with other nutrients, on tree growth and foliar nutrition were evaluated in a 22-year-old, thinned lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta Dougl. var. latifolia Engelm.) stand in central British Columbia. Results indicate that lodgepole pine has no clear preference for a particular nitrogen (N) source, when applied alone or combined with other potential growth-limiting nutrients. Results also indicate that N-deficient lodgepole pine may not respond favourably to N fertilization unless other nutrients are combined with N in the fertilizer prescription. When applied alone, fall-applied AN and urea were relatively ineffective in stimulating tree growth at this site, apparently due to induced deficiencies of other nutrients (especially sulfur). Foliar nutrient status and growth were significantly improved by including a Complete fertilizer with both N sources. Results from this study do not ...
