IDF Timber Supply

In a recent timber supply review for the Merritt Timber Supply Area3, "dry" Douglas-fir stands account for about 101 000 ha in the timber harvesting land base. Most of this area is designated for selection4 management systems. However, determining where to draw the line between merchantable and unmerchantable for individual stands that make up the whole dry Douglas-fir forest is problematic. Variation between the forest inventory labels and actual stand conditions is high. Potential productivity can not readily be determined from the height and age of dominant trees on the sites because of past suppression. Otherwise productive sites may have low current net volume yields because of heavy past removals and/or root disease losses. A challenge lies in differentiating between stands for which productivity can be profitably improved through management (e.g., root disease control, site preparation, fill planting and/or commercial thinning), and those which are truly below the productive threshold.

The Pothole Creek Demonstration Area represents a concerted effort by staff from consultants, licencees and the Ministry of Forests to understand and address these issues.

4 A silvicultural system used to maintain or create areas containing a wide range of tree ages or sizes. The time interval between harvests in such areas is fairly short (usually less than 30 years), and during these harvests either single scattered trees or small groups of trees are removed from across the entire area.
