Development of the Demonstration Area

The first year (1996) was focussed on data acquisition, including forest cover typing using photo interpretation, terrestrial ecosystem mapping, documenting forest health conditions, assessing wildlife habitat values, and growth and yield sampling. All of this information was entered into a geographic information system (GIS) for analysis and reporting. The GIS environment was ideal for integrating these different databases and relating them to stand structure, wood quality, and integrated resource management objectives. Four silviculture treatment units-shelterwood, selection, clearcut and rehabilitation of forest-grassland complexes-were identified, based on land base constraints. These broad treatment types provide a framework for the design of more site-specific harvesting, regeneration, and stand tending prescriptions.
