Version 4.1, April 2007
- New features in version 4.1 include a windthrow module added to the variable retention feature, and a trembling aspen database.
- Also, the previous general release of TIPSY (version 3.2) contained some bugs. See the What’s New page for details. A significant bug in the fertilization option became apparent in the fall of 2006 and warranted this release of version 4.1.
Version 3.2, October 2004
- Some species were previously unavailable in TIPSY because of lack of data. We recommended species substitutions in the Help. Now you are able to use site curves that were developed for that particular species, still substituting the volume-height data of a different species in TIPSY's database. When you do this, TIPSY also substitutes many default values of the species in its database.
- New juvenile height models for lodgepole pine and interior spruce. The lodgepole pine default site curves have been changed to Thrower (1994). You might also notice that some site curves have an '(ac)' following the developer's name.
- Variable retention adjustment factors.
- Fertization was enhanced to include multiple species, multiple applications and more response data.
- The option to create your own custom OAFs, at both the stand and the species level.
- More operational factors, including a decay, waste and breakage model that mimics VDYP's DWB model, and an OAF developed specifically for Armillaria in the ICH.
- Multiple crop tree summaries through the custom table.
- You now enter planting stock height rather than age.
- A new table combines yield and economic data, as well as height and age, for 'events' such as commercial thinning.
3.0h, JANUARY 2003
We have incorporated additional output in BatchTIPSY, with funding
support from Tesera Systems Inc., previously the McGregor Group. The
same output is currently available in TIPSY, so this is really a change
in functionality only.
New BatchTIPSY output includes:
- live crown ratio
- stand table
- stock table
- volume per tree
- dimensional lumber and chips
- logs
- mortality
- snags
- coarse woody debris
Output is available on a single column basis or as preformatted tables.
You can select 'stock', for example, and get tables that look just like
the stock table in TIPSY.
3.0b, SEPTEMBER 2000
TIPSY version 3.0b contains a few minor corrections to version 3.0. See
Bug Alerts for more information.
3.0, JUNE 2000
Main changes include:
- Existing stand, or startup, option calculates initial density
- Genetic gain for single and multiple species
- Fertilization for single species stands
- Commercial thinning for Douglas-fir and lodgepole pine
- Coarse woody debris
- Jobs output (ie. silviculture, harvesting and manufacturing labour)
- The Batch TIPSY interface was written for MS Windows and incorporated
into the TIPSY interactive program
- Clumped distributions for coastal hemlock and interior lodgepole
pine
- Tables that mimic 'Timber Supply' and 'VDYP' format output
- Custom tables option (e.g. tree count, BA, volume, MAI and DBH by
merchantable limits, number of crop trees selection, etc).
- New Plot program functionality (eg. save, export, lines, points
and bars, curve selection, etc.)
- New lodgepole pine site curves developed by Nigh 1999, replace the
Goudie 1984 dry site curves. Merchantable volumes (12.5+) at stand
heights of 12 to 30 m change by a noticeable amount in plantations
and natural stands with the exception of low establishment densities
(<1 000 trees/ha) where changes are relatively small. At the higher
densities, the volume of natural stands tends to decline by 5 to 15
m3 (0 to 13%). Planted stands behave a little differently at these
higher establishment densities. At heights of 12 to 20 m, volumes
differ by about -15 to 15 m3 (-15 to 6%). At heights of 22 to 30m,
volumes differ by about 15 to 30 m (3 to 6%). The maximum observed
difference in the suite of test runs was 30 m3 (6%). Ninety percent
were within 20 m3 (5%) and 50% were within 10m3 (4%).
- 32-bit processing.
2.1e September, 1998
Changes to version 2.1d:
- Corrected the number of trees removed in the yield tables when OAFs
are applied to pre-commercially thinned stands, and you use in the
economic module.
2.1d March, 1998
Changes incorporated:
- Lodgepole pine repression
- Stand and stock tables, log and lumber tables
- Snag and mortality tables, and the capability to edit snag specifications
- Economic summary, and the capability to edit economic specifications
- Plot program plots negative values
- Changed Operational Adjustment Factor from a percentage to a factor
(0.00% to 1.00).
- Incorporated Sitka spruce site curves (Nigh 1997). At low sites,
yield decreased slightly, and at higher sites, yields increased slightly.
As an example, at site index 20 the yield (merch vol 12.5+) is roughly
6% lower at age 100. At site index 35, the yield is roughly 4% higher.
- The age used to calculate OAF 2 was changed to years since germination
for both planted and natural stands at the request of Timber Supply
Branch.
- Output in imperial units for the benefit of our U.S. clients. TIPSY
can change from one to the other 'on the fly'. Of course, some things
such as board feet don't change. And all TIPSY's documentation, online
or printed, uses metric references and examples.
1.3 (WinTIPSY) August, 1995
Changes incorporated:
- Multiple-document interface
- Multiple species feature and product tables added
- Yield tables reformatted to include MAI and optional merchantability
limits
- Recalibrated Sitka Spruce tables in TASS based on new data - yields
were lowered.
- A 2 year 'germination' delay was added to the reported age of natural
stands.
- Ability to plot product table variables and MAI
- Site index conversion equations built into WinTIPSY
1.0 (WinTIPSY) April, 1994
Changes incorporated:
- View menu command improved
- Changes to Plot program for printing
0.99 Beta release (WinTIPSY) March, 1994
- First release of WinTIPSY at Forest Management Institute of BC (FMIBC),
Prince George
Support is provided for the Windows XP operating system, although TIPSY will likely perform well on earlier versions of MS Windows or Windows emulation software.
BC Government users should contact WTS: Workplace Technology Services (formerly CITS) and make a service request to install TIPSY on your computer. Your office may have IT support staff who will make this request for you, or you may need to contact them yourself. If you are calling from a government office on the government phone network, please call 250.387.7000, otherwise please call toll-free at 1.866.660.0811 or request through this link (https://logon.gov.bc.ca/logon-cgi/idir/loginCookie.cgi?TYPE=33554433&REALMOID=06-3e8dca14-3e54-4a76-8e58-9cb883ee1bec&GUID=&SMAUTHREASON=0&METHOD=GET&SMAGENTNAME=aladdin77000&TARGET=$SM$https%3a%2f%2f77000%2egov%2ebc%2eca%2f) It's helpful to remind WTS staff that TIPSY Version 4.1 is approved for installation on government workstations.
