TIPSY Error Bulletin 2 - Site index conversion in BatchTIPSY 3.0 and 3.2

Summary

BatchTIPSY wasn't checking correctly for valid ranges for site indices.

BatchTIPSY 3.0 checked the site index for the first species only in each row of the user's input file, and allowed a range of 5 to 50m for that species. No other site indices in that row were checked for a valid range.

BatchTIPSY 3.2 checked to see that the site index of the first species fell within the range for the site indices of all species in that row! For example, if the first site index was 7 m for pine, and you also had interior redcedar in that run, BatchTIPSY would output a table of zeros, since the lower limit for interior redcedar site index is 10, not 7.

In the corrected version, BatchTIPSY 3.2d and later:

  • each species is correctly checked for its own valid site index range
  • if a user-entered site index is out of range for any species, BatchTIPSY won't produce a table, but will produce an error message alerting the user.
  • if a site index is not provided for any secondary species, the program attempts a site index conversion. If there is no conversion equation available, BatchTIPSY substitutes the site index of the dominant species. Once this new site index has been determined, the program checks to ensure it is within range for the species in question. If it is not, BatchTIPSY changes the site index to the closest number that is in range, runs the table with the amended site index and puts a warning message to that effect in the error file.
Note that there are error messages when a table isn't produced, and warning messages when a table is produced. Also note that in BatchTIPSY 3.2, the dominant species is that with the largest percent composition. In previous releases, the dominant species had to be the first species in the input file. This is no longer necessary.

Affected Software Version

All releases of version 3.0, and version 3.2a and 3.2b. These are the version numbers that appear on the BatchTIPSY title bar, not in the downloaded file name.

Corrected Software Version

BatchTIPSY 3.2d.
