Model OriginsReturn to top of page

Following the publication of yield tables for Douglas-fir (Mitchell and Cameron, 1985), Ministry planners requested the development of software that would give them electronic access to the yield table information. The original software was known as the Meta Model.

In 1990, RamSoft Systems Ltd. translated the program from BASIC to C and restructured it to accommodate the next generation of managed stand yield tables, and to improve the ease and speed of operation. The program was renamed TIPSY, the Table Interpolation Program for Stand Yields. Research Branch distributed it to forest managers across the province, along with a user's guide (Mitchell et al, 1991). RamSoft Systems Ltd. rewrote TIPSY to Windows format in 1993 and christened it WinTIPSY. Research Branch continues to develop the program in response to requests from clients both inside and outside the ministry. Since MS Windows is such a widely used operating environment, we dropped the 'Win' reference at the front of the name, and now call the program 'TIPSY'! For a detailed list of what's new in this release of TIPSY, see Release News .
