Release NotesReturn to top of page

PrognosisBC Version 3.3 represents a full calibration (refitting) of the model's growth and mortality functions using BC data. Its geographical scope is no longer limited to ecological site types common to both the Southern Interior of British Columbia and North Idaho. This release includes the Interior Douglas Fir (IDF) and Interior Cedar Hemlock (ICH) zones. The User Interface for Version 3.3 has been improved and made compliant with BC Government software standards. The core growth model for Version 3.3 is unchanged from Version 3.1

The USFS Stand Visualization Sysytem (SVS) has also been added to PrognosisBC. A Quick Start wizard has been added to SimProg, and ViewProg has been simplified. A detailed Tutorial Guide has also been added to the system. Version 2.0 is no longer available for installation on BC government computer workstations, but will be maintained until Version 3.3 is fully calibrated for all other subzones within the model's area of application. Other new features can be found on this page.

Version HistoryReturn to top of page

Version 3.1

Version 3.1 represents a full calibration (refitting) of the model's growth and mortality functions using BC data for the IDF and ICH zones. The refitting represents a major shift away from the site associations used by Version 2.0 and its parent model, the Northern Idaho variant of FVS.

Version 3.0

Version 3.0 represents a partial calibration (refitting) of the model's growth and mortality functions using BC data for the IDF zone. This refitting represented a major shift away from the site associations used by Version 2.0 and its parent model, the Northern Idaho variant of FVS. Diameter and height growth relationships for the IDF were introduced, as well as a revised mortality model.

Version 2.0

PrognosisBC Version 2.0 was released in July 1999 and updated in July 2000. Like Version 1.02 it was also limited to ecological site types common to both North Idaho and the Southern Interior of British Columbia. However, the following issues, which were outstanding in the 1998 pilot release of PrognosisBC , were addressed in Version 2.0:
  • improved growth estimates for trees >7.5cm DBH in the IDF;
  • improved height predictions, using BEC- and species-based height-DBH relationships;
  • improved carrying capacity estimates (i.e., maximum BA by site series);
  • tapering of height growth for old trees;
  • tapering of DBH growth for old trees; and
  • inclusion of provisional FIZ based tree level decay, waste and breakage factors.

Version 1.02b

A pilot version (1.02b) of PrognosisBC was released to BC's forestry profession in April 1998. Version 1.02b was limited to ecological site types common to both North Idaho and the Southern Interior of British Columbia, and included:
  • calibrated large tree diameter growth models for the Nelson forest region;
  • coarse adjustments to the large tree height growth model, small tree height growth model and mortality model;
  • the Western Root Disease Version 3.0 extension; and
  • tutorials and online help.

    Version 3.3 Installation
    It is not possible to have different versions (3.0-3.3) concurrently installed on a workstation. Changes to the program database structure, as well as registry key conflicts, make this impossible.

  • Download PrognosisBC Version 3.3 [29mb] - MFR site, ESSA Technologies mirror site
    • Note for BC Government Users
      To request installation, please contact CITS (recently renamed WTS: Workplace Technology Services) and make a service request for PrognosisBC Version 3.03.0004 and for its companion visualization software, SVS 3.36. Your office may have IT support staff who will make this request for you, or you may need to contact them yourself. If you are calling from a government office on the government phone network, please call 250.387.7000, otherwise please call toll-free at 1.866.660.0811 or request through this link. It's helpful to remind CITS/WTS staff that PrognosisBC Version 3.3 and SVS 3.36 are both approved for installation on government workstations. Need help? Contact Shelley Grout, MFR Research Branch Software Applications Specialist, at 250.387.6718.

    Version 3.1 & 3.2 Installation
    These versions are no longer available for download or installation.

    Version 3.0 Installation
    If you already have Version 2.0 installed on your machine and wish to continue using that version, select a different installation directory when prompted during the installation. Version 3.0 installation notes can be found in this document. PrognosisBC Version 3.0 does not meet BC government criteria for installation on government workstations.

  • Download PrognosisBC Version 3.0 [31mb] - MFR site, ESSA Technologies mirror site
  • Version 2.0 Installation
    The Version 2.0 install pack assumes that a directory named "c:\temp" exists on your workstation. If it doesn't exist, you need to create this directory prior to installation. PrognosisBC Version 2.0 does not meet BC government criteria for installation on government workstations.

  • Download PrognosisBC Version 2.0 [10mb] - MFR site, ESSA Technologies mirror site
  • If you have any problems or questions about installing or using PrognosisBC, please contact PrognosisBC Support, or call toll-free 1.866.515.3772. We also encourage you to be familiar with the MFR Use Policy and to download the User Guide and Tutorials from this page.
