New Features Return to top of page

PrognosisBC Version 3.3 is now available for download. This release allows projection of stands from the Interior Douglas Fir (IDF) and Interior Cedar Hemlock (ICH) BEC zones. Click here to go to the download page.

Version 3.3 represents a full calibration (refitting) of the model's growth and mortality functions using BC data. Hence, its geographical scope is no longer limited to site associations common to both the south-eastern interior of British Columbia and North Idaho. Users who need to project stands in the ESSF or MS zones may wish to consider using the Version 2.0 release.

The following modules are also available for experimental use:
  • a prototype system that predicts regeneration after natural disturbance or stand entry;
  • a prototype Fire and Fuel Effects (FFE) module based on the USFS Northern Idaho FFE variant;
  • a database capability that allows input and output data to be supplied to or from an Excel file, Access database file or Oracle database;
  • a dwarf mistletoe effects module; and
  • a spatially explict mountain pine beetle module.
Users interested in these experimental modules should contact the Support Centre for more information.

The following new features are included in the new release:

  • improved diameter and height growth estimates for the IDF and ICH;
  • improved tree mortality estimates;
  • growth and mortality estimates indexed by BEC classes;
  • ability to display stands with metric units, using the USFS Stand Visualization System (SVS); and
  • a detailed Tutorial Guide explaining and demonstrating the use of all three PrognosisBC modules.

Click here to view the Version 3 Release Statement .

Version 2.0 will be available until Version 3.3 is fully calibrated for all subzones within the model's area of application. However, this older version is not supported for BC government workstations, and interested users will need to make use of other equipment if they wish to use the older model.

Guidelines and field cards for collecting input data for growth models used in British Columbia are available from this page.

Finally, PrognosisBC's online Help will be updated in Spring 2008. The current online help system has not been updated to reflect changes made after Version 2.0.

Bug AlertReturn to top of page

Information about software bugs will be listed here as they are detected.

Users should be aware of one identified issue with Version 3.3.

  • When simulation runs are exported to ViewProg for more advanced visualization, the results are automatically exported to the PrognosisBC database. Recent upgrades to MS Access 2003 have caused the automatic export to become much slower, and occasionally the 'hourglass' cursor may remain even after the automatic export has ended. If the cursor does not return to its normal state after 30 seconds, the 'Please Wait - Importing Treelist Data' message can be cancelled. The run will be correctly imported.

    This annoying behavior is under investigation. Also under study is the longer time required to export runs, relative to Version 3.0.
