A brief summary of the main SYLVER events are listed below:

Events

1985
  • First meeting focussed on the site selection, sampling, material requirements, industry cooperation, manpower requirements, and timing.
  • Localization of eleven suitable second-growth Douglas-fir stands.
  • Conceptual design of SYLVER.
1986
  • Sampling of the six selected stands in Vancouver Island.
  • FAN$Y was originally developed.
1989
  • Publication of the Douglas-fir Task Force report. Kellogg, R. M. (Editor), 1989. Second growth Douglas-fir: its management and conversion for value. Forintek Canada Corporation, Vancouver, B.C., Special Publication No. SP-32, 173 pp.
1990
  • Review of the Douglas-fir Task Force and SYLVER done by the New Zealand Forest Research Institute.
  • Release of a VHS video entitled "The SYLVER System - Forest Management Simulator" that gives a 10-minute overview of SYLVER.
1993
  • First release of the DOS version of Fred's Forest, an interactive forest management game and training tool based on SYLVER.
1995
  • Application of SYLVER to evaluate pruning treatments. Mitchell, K.J. 1995. Simulate the Treatment Before Pruning the Stand. In D.P. Hanley, C.D. Oliver, D.A. Maguire, D.G. Briggs, and R.D. Hardware

Minimum hardware requirements:

  • 4 MB of available random access memory (RAM), 8 MB of RAM recommended
  • Pentium or equivalent computer system
  • 5 MB of free disk space on your hard drive.

Software

Minimum software requirements:

  • MS-DOS, Windows NT 3.5 or greater.
  • Some components can run on Unix.

SYLVER does not have a formal registration process at the moment. However, all the information related to the custom runs provided to clients is kept in our files for a number of years for future reference.

SYLVER is not available for general distribution outside of the Research Branch because of proprietary components, and substantial training and hardware requirements. To request SYLVER runs contact Mario Di Lucca. In the near future, clients will be able to electronically submit SYLVER input parameters over the Internet and Research Branch staff will complete the runs and return the output.   All the information related to the custom runs provided is kept on file for a number of years for future use.
