Vegetation Control Study

Treatments and Layout:

• 40-cm rootless cuttings were planted at 3 m spacing
• Randomized complete block design
  • 3 treatments replicated 5 times
• Each plot consisted of 144 trees (12 rows of 12 trees)
  • inner 36 trees (6 rows of 6 trees) designated as the measurement plot
• Treatments:
• Untreated control
• Herbicide
  • glyphosate at 2%
  • backpack sprayer and bucket shield used to apply herbicide
  • applied within planting rows in mid-June 1996 and 1997
• Mat (opaque polyethylene)
  • green 60 cm x 60 cm mat
  • installed in April 1995
• Measurements:
  • root collar diameter
  • diameter at breast height
  • height

Sites:

1. Menzies Bay Hybrid Poplar Plantation

Major Findings:

There were no significant differences in root collar diameter between the three treatments (Table 1.). Tree height was significantly greater (p < 0.006) in the mat treatment than in the other treatments. The herbicide was not applied during the 1995 growing season. As a result the herbicide plots were treated as control plots.
