Assessment of browsing damage on Maiden Creek Range Unit - Veasy Plateau

Contents Menu Lodgepole pine planted in 2001 and 2002 by West Fraser Mills received extensive browsing damage (90% in 2001; 35% in 2002). Browsed seedling Several field trips by Forest Service, West Fraser Mills, local ranchers, and Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food staff did not clearly resolve the source of the browsing damage.

The goal of this project was to determine the cause of extensive browsing damage to planted lodgepole pine on the Maiden Creek Range Unit – Veasy Plateau.

Three 0.25 ha exclosures were constructed at locations at least 1 km apart. Lodgepole pine was planted inside the exclosures and also in approximately equal areas outside the exclosures. Exclosure used for assessments Fifty seedlings were randomly selected inside and outside at each exclosure for further monitoring. In total, 150 seedlings were monitored inside exclosures (no cattle or horse browsing possible) and 150 seedlings were monitored outside the exclosures (cattle, horse, moose, and deer browsing possible). The same seedlings were assessed for browsing damage approximately every two weeks for two years.
