Overstory/understory relationships in the Ponderosa Pine Biogeoclimatic Zone

Contents Menu The objective of this project was to assess the potential recovery of understory grassland vegetation for wildlife and livestock by examining previous attempts to thin and burn overstocked Ponderosa Pine (PP) stands in the East Kootenay Trench. Ten PP sites were selected in the Nelson Forest Region which were previously thinned and/or burned. The relationship between forest overstory under two thinning treatments (to approximately 500 and 700 stems/ha) with and without prescribed burning, and understory vegetation was determined.
