Overview

Sustainable forest management requires the development of sensitive and reliable indicators of sustainability and their monitoring over time.  Conserving soil productivity and hydrologic function is a key aspect of forest ecosystem sustainability and a protocol has been developed describing indicators for sustainability and methods for collecting the data necessary to evaluate the sustainability of forest practices.  Six indicators have been developed for describing the status of soils on recently harvested areas in British Columbia.  Each indicator is based on scientific evidence for including them as key aspects of soil conservation.  In addition, thresholds have been defined for four indicators that can be considered when determining whether soil conservation objectives are being met.
