Learning Organization Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is a Learning Organization?

Peter Senge has defined a Learning Organization as one in which people continually expand their capacity to create the results they desire, where innovative and expansive patterns of thinking are nurtured, where collective aspiration is unbound, and where people can engage in continually learning to see the whole together.

The Forest Service is working on a definition that resonates with the ministry's culture:

Corporate Learning + Business Improvement + Knowledge Management
= Learning Organization

The BC Forest Service already demonstrates many characteristics of a Learning Organization. The key now is to continue what we are doing and introduce other activities that further support a Learning Organization culture.

2. How does CI fit with Learning Organization?

The principles and tools of Continuous Improvement are one of the characteristics of a Learning Organization which has been recognized in the Forest Service definition of Learning Organization. A Learning organization can be seen as the overarching framework, and the practices and principles like Continuous Improvement, Knowledge Management, Corporate Learning and Bob Chartier Leadership tools are all pieces that support the broader Learning Organization.
