- Guide S21, Classifying Ministry Data Using
Corporate Code Tables
- Guide S38, Data Administration Standards (includes
overview of Org Unit, TSA, Tree/Log Species code structures)
Availability of Corporate Codes
- Corporate codes defined within MoFR are available
through the
Corporate Code Section of IDD.
- Before creating a new code, check IDD to ensure the
code does not already exist.
Data Administration Role
- The Data Administration group manages corporate code updates for
ministry data custodians. The corporate code tables were established as a
means of storing and managing ministry codes and making their definitions
available throughout the ministry. Program areas doing new application
development are encouraged to re-use existing codes rather than re-inventing
the wheel and creating multiple meanings for the same data.
Background
- Business area data custodians are responsible for
defining data classification codes to clarify and standardize business data
within their area of expertise. As use of these codes is often cross-program
to ministry-wide, they are held in corporate code tables with
additions/updates/deletions managed carefully due to cross-ministry impacts.
- Data Administration is responsible for managing updates to the full set
of ministry data classification codes. For the last several years DA staff
have been reviewing code requests and updating corporate code tables. The DA
group has also created standards for the development and update of ministry
corporate codes.
