Ponderosa Pine Snags: Exploring Alternatives to Falling and Limbing Using Explosives to Reduce Blow-down Concerns and Maintain Structural Forest Habitat for Wildlife

Description: Ponderosa pine trees killed by mountain pine beetle were topped using explosives to minimize the likelihood of blow-down hazards and maintain the potential of standing snags to serve as habitat to wildlife. The objectives of this project were to 1) demonstrate and document the technique on digital video, 2) examine safety aspects, 3) estimate costs for larger scale topping projects, and 4) understand the appropriate application of the technique.
