Silviculture Strategy

The Silviculture Strategy site contains FFT’s initiative to carry out forest-level analyses for silviculture investments in all management units across BC.

This site contains analyses reports for timber quantity, quality and habitat supply for individual management units (TFLs/TSAs). Also included are special initiatives examining how silviculture may be used to enhance and maintain habitat supply.

The Initiative also provides training and technical skills in forest-level planning and analysis to operational, industry, ministry and consulting foresters.

The overall objective is to provide FFT with information to rationally and strategically allocate and deploy silviculture investments.

The outputs from this strategic planning initiative include:

• an updated and fully analyzed provincial incremental silviculture strategy;
• a rational investment plan for future FFT/government funds;
• a series of detailed objectives and performance indicators at the management unit, regional and provincial levels;
• a measure of the social benefits, in the short term from silviculture jobs and in the long term from an improved timber supply;
• standardized analysis output so that budget allocations can be evaluated and weighed on a consistent basis;
• information that can be utilized by industry and government decision makers in their considerations with regard to tree improvement, silvicultural regimes, partial cutting, commercial thinning and management for non-timber values;
• information that can be utilized to develop the density management regimes needed for backlog silviculture prescriptions and stand management prescriptions as outlined by the chief forester’s policy and guidelines on stand density management; and
• trained competent foresters able to do forest-level analysis, and able to meaningfully contribute to future timber supply reviews or analyses.
