Province Launches Trees for Tomorrow
PENTICTON – Community organizations, First Nations and local governments are invited to apply to the Trees for Tomorrow program, a cost-sharing venture to plant millions of trees in the public areas of cities, towns, villages and regional districts throughout B.C. over the coming five years.  The initiative includes a mountain pine beetle program stream that will see seedlings provided for urban areas affected by the epidemic.

New Harvest Level Set For Kamloops Timber Supply Area

Allowable Annual Cut Set For Tree Farm Licence 14
VICTORIA – Effective immediately, the allowable annual cut for tree farm licence 14 will increase from 160,000 cubic metres to 180,000 cubic metres, deputy chief forester Craig Sutherland announced today.  The tree farm licence has significant amounts of mature lodgepole pine, which is vulnerable to the mountain pine beetle.

VICTORIA – The Province has granted an additional $250,000 to the Cariboo-Chilcotin Beetle Action Coalition to finalize a regionally developed plan for sustaining beetle-impacted communities and First Nations into the future, Forests and Range Minister Rich Coleman announced.

A grant of $27,000 will go to the Chase Creek Community Association to complete a hydro-geomorphic risk assessment for the Chase Creek watershed near Chase to determine the risks posed by increased stream flows due to mountain pine beetle salvage activities.

Xeni Gwet'in Get $51,000 Grant to Improve Fish Passage
VICTORIA – A First Nation in a remote area southwest of Williams Lake will use a $51,000 provincial government grant to ensure that fish can pass through culverts where streams are crossed by roads.  The funding comes from the Environment Ministry’s Mountain Pine Beetle Ecosystem Restoration program.

New Green Community Energy System for Prince George
PRINCE GEORGE – The City of Prince George will build a new hot water community energy system thanks to more than $5.3 million from the Canada-B.C. Municipal Rural Infrastructure Fund.  This innovative project will utilize biomass, such as wood impacted by the mountain pine beetle infestation, to decrease electricity and heating fuel consumption of downtown facilities.

Roof Completion Marks Major Milestone for Richmond Oval
RICHMOND – A construction milestone for a major Olympic venue was marked today as the final section of the Richmond Oval’s massive roof was lifted into place.  The roof includes 15 B.C.-manufactured glulam beams that are nearly 100 metres in length.  The beams are linked by “wood wave” roof sections constructed from one million board feet of pine beetle-killed wood.
