Fire Behaviour Research in Beetle-Attacked Stands

The Carrott Lake Mountain Pine Beetle Experimental Fire Study, a project to test how fire behaves in forests attacked by the mountain pine beetle, is being conducted by the B.C. Forest Service, Natural Resources Canada - Canadian Forest Service, and other research partners. The study site is about 75 kilometres southwest of Vanderhoof.
Above: A research plot with beetle-attacked lodgepole pine is ignited and the fire spreads through the test site.

Right: Eleven research plots, ranging in size from 1 hectare to 4 hectares, are involved in the Carrott Lake study.

Below left: Fireguards, sprinklers and fire retardant prevent the fire from escaping the test area. Firefighters are also on site to assist with suppression activities.

Below right: Ground-level views show the variability in fire intensity observed for the Aug. 13, 2006 fire environment conditions under which the plot is ignited.
