This site has been developed to address juvenile spacing in lodgepole pine stands that may be infected by hard pine stems rusts, specifically stalactiform blister rust, comandra blister rust and western gall rust. Much of the information contained herein assumes that the decision to space has already been made.

It is important to include some reference to the discussion regarding the larger issue of whether or not to prescribe spacing treatments in general. Though this discussion has become somewhat polarized in recent years, it is clear that the decision to space can only be made in the context of clear, well-defined objectives. Typically, these objectives have been related primarily to timber outputs; however increasingly, these objectives have reflected non-timber outputs such as recreation, visual sensitivity and habitat creation.

The following links and citations reflect a range of views and potential uses of spacing as a stand management tool.
