Ground
Survey Data Standards for Tracking Bark Beetle Management Activities

Following an aerial survey (or
returning to a known infestation site, possibly pheromone baited the
previous year), ground surveys are conducted to estimate the numbers
of trees to be treated, mark trees for treatment, or define the outer
boundary of an infestation in preparation for removal by
harvesting.
Several types of ground surveys are
conducted depending on the expected method of treatment to be
used. These range in intensity from a walkthrough (least
intense), grid probes, to fall and burn layout (most intense). A
brief description of surveys is presented in the Bark
Beetle Management Guidebook. Example district specific
survey standards are found on the FPB
FIA web site.
Because of the variety of survey
methods, the following are the recommended minimum attributes that
should be included in any ground survey tracking system (additional attributes can be added by the
TSA.):

Attribute Description (where standard
codes are available, a look-up table is a useful feature to link to the
field)
Node_num = a unique identity
number generated by the GIS or
database; ties the record to spatial data
Region/District = standard three letter codes
Year = year of survey
Site_ID = generated by the district using whatever numbering system is
in place
Location = local geographic name
Mapsheet_polygon = from forest cover map
Aerial_surveyID = link to corresponding to
Site_num in aerial survey record, if available
GPS Waypoint; Latitude, Longitude = from GPS
Survey Date / Surveyed by = from survey data
Responsibility = MOF, SBFEP, Licensee (name), private, other
Survey_type = grid probe, walkthrough, etc.
FHF = predominant FH factor (pest) encountered
Area_surveyed = area represented by the sample (i.e., grid probed a
stand of 25 ha)
Survey_line_length = for specific types of ground surveys, performance
tracked by metres of line surveyed
Num_currents / Perc_Current = Number of trees / percentage of stand
currently (green) attacked
Num_2yr_cycle /
Perc_2yr_cycle = Number of trees /
percentage of stand infested with beetles in 2 yr life cycles
Num_Reds / Perc_red = Number of trees / percentage of stand
that are red attacked (no live brood)
Vol_to_treat = Estimated or measured volume of trees with live brood requiring
treatment. Calculated from the sum of number of trees with brood
(current + 2 yr cycle) x avg. vol/tree, or directly measured.
Other = other pest damage
Action = proposed treatment (i.e., fall and burn, MSMA, conventional
harvest, small-scale salvage, heli-log, defer and bait, abandon)
Comments = other information
