The Canadian Forest Service examined
the moth's ability to feed on native tree species to provide basic
information for a risk analysis if gypsy moth became established in
B.C. They found that the preferred list included Garry oak, red alder,
trembling aspen, balsam poplar, paper birch, speckled alder, and
tamarack. Acceptable species included black cottonwood, choke cherry,
and pin cherry. Survival studies show successful brood production on
Douglas-fir, lodgepole pine, western larch, grand fir, western white
pine, ponderosa pine, mountain hemlock, western hemlock and ponderosa
pine. (Source: A Risk Assessment of European Gypsy Moth, March
1994. Consultant's report).
