About Aerial Spraying Btk for
Eradication of Gypsy Moth in B.C.

Why is aerial spraying necessary - can't ground-based methods be used?

Aerial Btk treatments are more effective on sites with tall trees since it is difficult to get spray coverage into the upper parts of tree canopies with the ground spraying. Coverage is also more even and complete with aerial treatments. Large areas are also more efficiently treated than using ground-based spray techniques.

When will the spraying take place?

Depending on the rate of insect development, the first application will probably be conducted sometime in April and ending as late as early June.  This period is highly weather dependent and relates to timing the spray when the insects are in the most vulnerable life stages.

Does the aerial spraying involve one treatment or more? If more, why?

The aerial spray treatment will likely require three applications, spaced about a week apart. This is because gypsy moth larvae would be hatching over a period of time and repeated sprays would be necessary to ensure that emerging larvae would feed on the Btk while it was still on foliage and still active. Btk is only effective for a short time after application. Localized follow-up treatments in the second year may be necessary to ensure eradication.
