Gypsy Moth Trapping Results in
2006
Results of Canadian Food
Inspection Agency's Annual Monitoring and Ministry of Forest and Range's Mass
Trapping
In the summer of 2006, 153 male moths were caught in
72 pheromone traps at 15 locations listed below:
BC Interior: (total = 1 moth)
Grand Forks (1)
Lower Mainland: (total = 5 moths)
Harrison Lake (1), Chilliwack (1), White Rock (1), Delta (Annacis
Is.)(2) Vancouver
Island: (total = 147 moths)
Saanich (3), Courtenay (39), Sidney (22 - mt), Colwood (7), Lake
Cowichan (1), Mill Bay (1), Ladysmith (6), Nanaimo (1), S. Cedar Hill
(32 - mt), Saltspring Island (35 - mt).
mt =
High density mass trapping grids (trap density at 9 traps/ acre or 5760
traps/sq.mi.,
inter-trap distance 70 ft).
Mass trapping efforts on on Gabriola
Island and Duncan show very promising results. Moths were not
trapped in either mass trapping grid this summer following dramatic
reductions in catches in 2004
to 2005. The mass trapping grid in Sidney resulted in the
recovery of a non-viable
(unfertilized) egg
mass (see the alternative
treatment page). Egg masses searches
have been completed with the discovery of viable (fertilized) egg masses in Saanich
(Cedar Hill Golf Course) (4 egg masses), and Belmont Park (1).
More details on the proposed
treatments are available on the Treatment Status
page. Click
