Current Status of Gypsy Moth Treatment Operations in British Columbia

2006

TREATMENT DATES

The last application for Salt Spring Island was completed on June 5th (the 2 day spray was completed in one day).  Both Saanich and Nanaimo were treated for their third and final time on May 30th (Tues.) and May 31st (Wed.), respectively (see details below).

Three treatments were scheduled for each location and were spaced about 7 to 14 days apart.  The schedule varied depending on weather that drives the rate of insect development and also may delay spraying if it is too wet.   A developmental rate model is being used to time the spray when it will be most effective.  The model indicates when the next application will most likely occur.

Contractor crews went door-to-door in advance of the spray crews to warn home owners that their properties will be treated.  If necessary, the homeowner could cover or move items like lawn furniture, windows, cars, etc. that they may not want to be covered by spray deposits.  Such deposits are readily removed with soap and water with some light scrubbing.  Otherwise, the deposits will eventually weather and disappear after several days exposure to normal weather conditions.  Pets that may be easily frightened by the spray crews should be brought indoors while the treatment is occurring.  The spray does not pose any harm to pets including fish.  If you wish to avoid deposits entering the home, simply close doors and windows for up to one hour after the spray.

SPRAY FORMULATIONS

OTHER TREATMENTS

Both the Nanaimo and Salt Spring Island treatment areas will also be mass trapped this summer.  Mass trapping of several other sites is also being planned in S. Duncan, Gabriola Island, Saanich (Cedar Hill Golf Course), Sidney and Langley.  For more information, go to the Alternatives Treatment page.

Other locations where male gypsy moth adults were located in the summer of 2005 (see trapping history) will be trapped at various trap densities and monitored in the summer of 2006.
