Management of tree species composition

FFT is committed to:

  1. the sound management of tree species composition on lands that it reforests (and conducts silvicultural treatments), and
  2. contributing to the continual improvement of the management of tree species composition on other provincial lands.

To deliver on this commitment, FFT has several species-related initiatives underway, others have been completed, and additional projects are planned. In November 2005, ministry executive endorsed three species-related projects that are being funded by FFT:

  1. Update the provincial species selection guidelines;
  2. Quantify the effect of species choices (including broadleaf tree species) on long-term harvest levels; and
  3. Evaluate alternative means to establish forest-level targets for species composition in harvested areas.

This report provides a preliminary assessment of many issues related to the management of tree species composition in harvested areas in 11 Timber Supply Areas in the BC interior that have been heavily attacked by the mountain pine beetle.

In addition, the FFT program links and contributes to other initiatives that are relevant to managing tree species composition in disturbed areas. Click here to access the Future Forest initiative.
