Silviculture Strategy
Working Group
Type
1 Analysis
Forest for Tomorrow is Developing Type 1 Forest Level Silviculture
Strategies for Prince George TSA, Lakes TSA; Mackenzie TSA;
Morice TSA, TFL 42, TFL 53, Kamloops TSA; Williams Lake
TSA; 100 Mile House TSA; Merritt TSA; Okanagan TSA; and
Cranbrook TSA between August, 2005 and March 31, 2006.
Type I Strategy uses existing TSR summary information to
identify issues and opportunities for silviculture investments,
producing interim management unit specific harvest level,
timber quality and habitat objectives.
Its purpose is to help optimize the application of available
funding towards the goals of improving the future quantity
and quality of both habitat and timber supply. This is the
initial phase of Type II analysis and is interim until the
type II analysis is completed.
It will be used as one of several inputs in decisions on
funding allocations and treatment activities and although
it is being funded by FFT it is not limited to this funding
source.
The method in creating a type I silviculture strategy would
be to gather available information. Conduct issues & opportunities
analysis (increase/maintain). Propose potential silviculture
strategies to influence issues such as timber quantity,
timber quality, and habitat supply. These potential strategies
are then reviewed in a 2-day workshop. This is where district
and regional staff time is needed. After the workshop a
draft and then a final type I strategy is developed.
Hopefully the workshop is attended by MOFR District silviculture
specialist/planner, District silviculture operations manager
(and staff), timber supply analyst staff, and regional representatives
as well as Licensees, MoE (or MoE contractors), and First
Nations.
In the workshop the participants will review and provide
comment on the major objectives, working targets, product
objectives, silvicultural strategies, silviculture regimes
& investment priorities, a Incremental Silviculture program,
jobs that will be created and further research & info needs.
