Abstract

As new breeding populations increase the genetic gain of reforestation propagules, seed orchard management techniques must evolve to capture and delivery this gain. The biological and management restraints to optimizing the delivery of gain are known but practical solutions to overcoming these restraints are few. One powerful tool is pollen management. Conifer pollen is produced in copious quantities and is relatively easy to handle.

This manual gives field-tested protocol for the collecting, extracting, storing, testing and re-application of Douglas-fir pollen. In addition, pollen management strategies for manipulating the gene pollen of seed orchard production crops are also given.

Keywords: pollen, pollination, pollen management, viability assays, genetic gain, seed orchard, Douglas-fir.
