Abstract

In an attempt to control the rate of reinvasion by native species, three different mixes of grass and clover seeds were applied to two sites in the Revelstoke Forest District, one in the ICH and the other in the ESSF. Spruce seedlings were planted at both sites at the same time as seeding. Vegetation height and cover and seedling height and diameter were measured annually for 5 years. Seeding had little effect on reinvasion by native species, and reduced the growth of planted spruce at one site. The seeded species behaved differently, depending on both the mix in which they were included and on the site where they were applied. At the site in the ESSF, it is possible that seeding will accelerate the restoration of organic matter, much of which was displayed during the course of mechanical preparation.
