Abstract

A summary of mechanical site preparation in British Columbia and its potential effects on wildlife is presented. Mechanical site preparation (MSP) has increased in the northeast, west-central, and southern interior parts of the province. The machine tapes are varied, but the disc trencher and the excavator are becoming increasingly common. The biogeoclimatic subzones in which an increase in MSP has taken place include the Sub-boreal Spruce, the Engelmann Spruce-Subapline Fir, the Boreal White and Black Spruce, the Sub-Boreal Pine-Spruce, and some portion of the Interior Douglas-fir. The main activities are planting, trail creation, and non-commercial brush conversion. A summary table of the different MSP types used in each zone is presented.
