Abstract

McMillan Bloedel Limited, with funding obtained under the Canada-British Columbia Forest Resource Development Agreement (FRDA), experimented with alternative harvesting systems at a study site near Campbell River. An area of high-elevation old-growth forest was harvested using a combination of clearcutting, clearcutting with leave patches (green tree retention), strip-cutting (shelterwood), and small clearcuts (patch cutting). The objectives of this study were to evaluate pre-harvest richness, diversity, and relative abundance of breeding forest birds in the Mass study area; and, to obtain baseline information on predation rates.
