Abstract

Forest health research issues have been given a high priority at various forest health and research meetings, but few specific research topics or priorities have been produced. To address this need, a questionnaire on forest health research needs was developed and distributed to forest management agencies, the forest industry, and other research agencies. Forty-two insect, disease, and mammal pests were identified for further research. Research priorities for insects and diseases were equally distributed and of greater importance than mammal pests. Broad-based research issues included pest responses to alternative silvicultural systems, the need for quantification of pest-caused losses, and the need to standardize survey methodology among agencies. Lower-profile research concerns included the pinewood nematode, nursery pests, and hardwood diseases. The potential introduction into the province of exotic pests such as the Gypsy moth was identified as an emerging issue.
