Abstract

A study commenced in 1987 to compare the effectiveness and quantify the effects on the site, of two brown and burn treatments, with respect to vegetative competition nutrients status, and growth of planted Douglas-fir seedlings, on an ecosystem-specific basis. The two treatments were herbicide application one year followed by burning the next, and herbicide application followed by burning the same year. The study was conducted on brushy NSR land in the Drier Maritime Coastal Western Hemlock biogeoclimatic subzone within the University of B.C. Research Forest at Haney. The study area used a randomized block design with 6 approximately one ha blocks, three of which were aerially sprayed with the herbicide-glyphosphate in September 1987. The remaining three were sprayed in July 1988 then all blocks were burned in October, 1988 using a helicopter.
