Abstract
Root inhabiting fungi are most often associated with the roots of forest trees (Marx and Barnett 1974). The colonized roots are called mycorrhizae ("fungus roots"). This fungus-plant relationship is mutually beneficial (symbiotic). The fungus acts as an extension of the root system by growing out from roots into soil spaces, increasing the absorbing surface area.
The descriptions in this publication are based on observations of ectomycorrhizae on Engelmann spruce ( Picea engelmannii), white spruce (Picea glauca), lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta), and interior Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) at the Heffley Reforestation Centre Ltd. near Kamloops, British Columbia (B.C.).
