Abstract

This field guide insert is one in a series of technical support documents intended for use by forestry staff to ensure high-quality data collection and interpretation for forest practices in British Columbia. They are intended to be used together when describing map strata, delineating treatment units, and developing prescriptions.

These documents are not substitutes for education, training, and field workshops on soils, ecology, soil conservation, and management strategies. They are support documents that complement these other activities and together constitute a good framework for organizing soil conservation extension and training.

The keys in this field guide insert have been abstracted from Land Management Reports No. 62 (1991), No. 63 (1991), and Field Guide Insert 2, and have been revised in response to recommendations provided by field scientists and forestry personnel following several years of use. This field guide insert is designed for personnel who collect data required to assess site sensitivity before the preparation of forestry plans and prescriptions (e.g., Pre-Harvest Silviculture Prescription [PHSP]).
