Abstract

This field guide insert is one in a series of technical support documents intended for use by forestry staff to ensure high-quality data collection and interpretation for forest practices in British Columbia. They are intended to be used together when describing map strata, delineating treatment units, and developing prescriptions.

These documents are not substitutes for education, training, and field workshops on soils, ecology, soil conservation, and management strategies. They are support documents that complement these other activities and together constitute a good framework for organizing soil conservation extension and training.

SiteTools

Overview

SiteTools provides convenient access to dozens of site index and height growth equations for British Columbia's commercial tree species, as well as site index conversion equations and growth intercept equations for some species. You can plot graphs, print tables, or just use the calculator. It also has a batch option for large data files. SiteTools contains the default site index curves used by the B.C. Ministry of Forests in timber supply analysis.

SiteTools includes the three most common site index estimation methods in B.C.: 1) BEC (Biogeoclimatic Ecosystem Classification) site index by site unit look-up table method, 2) growth intercept method, and 3) site index curve method. The methods differ in their availability throughout the province, their suitability for different stand conditions, the survey data required to predict site index, and their accuracy.
