The silviculture trial (Sx) program was instituted in the late 1940’s as one of the major ways to develop new techniques for improving reforestation and stand tending practices.  The trials were investigative in nature, usually of short duration and of pilot-scale, undertaken to solve a local operational problem or to develop, demonstrate or evaluate a new or proposed method or technique, design new equipment, or test the practical application of findings from research studies.  The trials were initially started as RNX trials (reforestation).  The name changed to Sx trials with the formation of the Silviculture Branch.
