Introduction to Silvicultural Systems

Introduction to Silvicultural Systems

Ministry of Forests. 1999. [Training]. Forest Practices Branch. Victoria, B.C.

The Introduction to Silvicultural Systems is an interactive web-based workbook for self-study. This self-study is well suited to foresters and forestry technicians who want to gain an understanding of the basic concepts and variations of silvicultural systems. It is also a handy online reference guide for more experienced prescription writers.

The purpose of the course is to provide practitioners with a general understanding of silvicultural systems. In addition to promoting the use of consistent terminology, the course encourages consideration of the site-specific application of all resource objectives. Participants are also encouraged to consider the full range of available silvicultural systems during prescription development.

Those who may find this material useful include government, industry and consulting staff who are responsible for designing, implementing, auditing, or supervising prescriptions for silvicultural systems.

The workbook is updated regularly and was recently revised to include the retention system.

A one-day classroom session is also available upon request. Based on the workbook, the course covers definitions, major types of systems, variations of the major types, a decision-making process, and choosing an appropriate system. For more information, contact Forest Practices Branch, Forest Development Section at (250) 387-6656.
