Woodlot Inventories

Guidelines for FIA Funding of Woodlot Inventories (March, 2008)

Purpose

  • To guide licensees when they are requesting FIA funding to conduct inventory activities on woodlots.

Guidelines for Funding

  1. Woodlots are eligible for FIA funding to conduct strategic level VRI Phase I Photo Interpretation similar to the inventory intensity on TSAs and TFLs. The work to be completed with this funding includes all aspects of the inventory up to and including submission for inclusion in the LRDW.
  2. The cost of inventory projects (subject to competitive bid) is expected to be $3000 for a woodlot up to 600 hectares in size. The target funding for areas in excess of the initial 600 hectares is $1.75 per hectare. Funding limits for woodlots less than 300 hectares in size will be considered case by case.
Example:
A Woodlot is 1200 hectares in size.
The first 600 hectares is allowed   $3,000
The subsequent 600 hectares is allowed $1.75/ hectare   $1,050
Total Cost (Target Funding) +/- $4,050
  1. Inventory work on the Schedule A, Private land in the woodlot is not eligible for FIA funding. However, licensees are encouraged to conduct an inventory on the whole woodlot (Crown and Private Land) at one time.
  2. When a woodlot association is preparing a proposal to conduct several woodlot inventories as one single project, the per/ha cost calculations are based on the area of individual woodlots, not the total area of all the woodlots in the proposal.

Criteria to receive Funding

Woodlot Inventory Projects will be eligible for FIA funding when the following criteria are met:

  1. The inventory meets the VRI Phase I standards.
  2. The vegetation attributes are supported by new calibration data in a minimum of 10 major forested polygons. The type and amount of fieldwork is to be agreed upon prior to the inventory project proceeding.
  3. The completed inventory will be stored in the LRDW.
  4. The purpose of the inventory is to have the AAC re-calculated, or the inventory is to be included in a new or revised Woodlot Plan.

Preparing an Inventory Proposal

  1. A licensee proposing to complete an inventory on their own woodlot should discuss the project with the district manager. A short simple proposal should be prepared stating the following:
