Monitoring Activity Area Expectations

The expectations for this activity area are that:

  • Recipients will provide measures to support objectives, criteria and indicators identified under the sustainable forest management planning activity area;
  • some objectives, criteria and indicators may have been identified under LRM planning or other strategic planning initiatives;
  • some of the measurement may entail collecting new information (e.g., inventory) and the associated inventory standards should be used where appropriate, see the FIA monitoring standard and guideline for further direction in cases where inventory standards are not appropriate;
  • some of the analysis of existing data may require data manipulation, and the reports must document the input data (including details of the collection methods), the type of manipulation, and analysis procedures, so the project could be repeated;
  • methods must be consistent with the stated purpose of the project;
  • under Terrestrial Biological and Physical Monitoring and Aquatic Biological and Physical Monitoring activities, where appropriate monitoring tools are not available, Recipients will work towards new monitoring tools and techniques that are effective and cost efficient;
  • Recipients will monitor the implementation and effectiveness of biodiversity conservation measures and standards;
  • Recipients will establish ecosystem baselines to allow comparison with current practice and strategies, and appropriate standards (e.g., inventory) will apply;
  • monitoring should link to modeling under the Wildlife, Habitat and Ecosystem Modeling activity, where Recipients will establish ecosystem models to predict indicators of future ecosystem health consistent with the draft Strategy for Habitat Supply Modeling for British Columbia;
  • all environmental monitoring data (related to land and resources) gathered through the FIA must be consistent with government approved data content, quality and physical storage standards; and
  • all resource information gathered in whole or in part through the FIA will be provided to the Government for its operational systems or the LRDW.
