Enhanced Forest Management
Babine Pilot Project

The project area is located in the northern portion of the Lakes Timber Supply Area (TSA), situated in the north-central interior of British Columbia in the easternmost part of the Prince Rupert Forest Region. The project area corresponds to the operating areas of the Babine Forest Products two Forest Licence tenures (A16823 and A16825).

The forests of the project area are predominately lodgepole pine (67%), with spruce (27%), and sub-alpine fir (6%). The total project area is 379,000 hectares of which 255,000 hectares are the timber harvesting land base.

Application of enhanced forest management practices, practices that are consistent with the direction provided by the zoning and guidelines of the Lakes Land and Resource Management Plan (LRMP), the efficient implementation of the Forest Practices Code, and a strategic focus on measurable targets will lead towards:

  • a doubling of the current mean annual increment and subsequent increase in the timber supply;
  • creation of a significant number of new jobs and training opportunities for forest workers;
  • a level of non-timber resource management that equals or enhances regulatory requirements;
  • the meeting or exceeding of Weldwood’s forest stewardship policy objectives; and
  • the strengthening of First Nations partnerships.
