Community Forest Program

The Town of Smithers and The Village of Telkwa established the Wetzin'kwa Community Forest Corporation to obtain a forest tenure within the Bulkley Timber Supply Area.

This community forest provides opportunities for management of Crown land in the vicinity of Hudson Bay Mountain.

Community forestry is authorized under the Forest Act and is intended to: provide long-term opportunities for achieving a range of community objectives, balance uses of forest resources, demonstrate good forest stewardship, enhance
the use of and benefits derived from the community forest area, encourage co-operation among stakeholders, and provide social and economic benefits to British Columbia.

 Our staff supports the Community Forest Program by
ensuring operational plans reflect higher level objectives, policy, and legislation.

Operational activities such as harvesting and road building
will be guided by a Forest Stewardship Plan under the Forest and Range Practices Act.
