South Island District Woodlot License Program

The South Island Forest District has twenty five Woodlot Licences spread through the district.
The first woodlots were awarded in the 1950’s as farm woodlots and more recent awards occurred in the 1980’s and through present day.

Many of the licenses are located in urban interface areas of the East Coast of Vancouver Island and provide many local people with forest recreation opportunities. Licensee face a spectrum of resource management issues that include the protection of biodiversity values in East Coast Douglas-fir ecosystems, protection of scenic values and in one case a management regime consistent with the recommendations of the Clayoquot Sound Scientific Panel.

There are 6,821 hectares of Crown Land and 1,701 hectares of private land in the woodlot licence program. The combined Allowable Annual Cut (AAC) for the private and crown land in woodlot licences in the district is 26,036 m3/year.

Proposed New Woodlots:

The South Island Forest District will be identifying approximately four new competitive Woodlot Licence opportunities as a result of the timber reallocation process. These woodlot licences will be located South of the Cowichan River in areas to be deleted from Tree Farm Licence 46. The following woodlot licences are proposed, pending consultation with First Nations:
