Palliser - Albert Recreation Site - # 46
Access
This attractive camping site is approximately 41 kilometres off
Highway 93 via a good to excellent 2WD gravel road. Turn off
Highway 93, about 21 kilometres east of Radium Hot Springs onto
Settler's Road and continue on the Palliser Forest Service Road at KM
12. Drive with caution across the Kootenay River and follow to
a T-junction at the Palliser River bridge. Keep left and turn
north onto the Albert River Road at the next junction. The site
is another 2 kilometres. NOTE: Logging and mining truck
traffic can be expected on Settler's Road.
Alternate Access: North-bound travelers can access the site
by tasking the Kootenay Road just north of the Canal Flats village
centre. A District recreation map should be referred to for this
driving route.
Characteristics and Description
This site is an excellent representative of stream-side camping in
the Rockies. Campsites are spread out among the level terraces
of an open pine forest and allow for some privacy. A number of
other spots, without facilities are suitable for large trailers or
overflow camping. The transparent waters of the Alberta and
Palliser rivers merge here and compliment other campsite views.
Special natural features are nearby: (1) cascades near the
Albert River bridge, 1 km north, (2) Palliser Falls and canyon
(watch footing), a short distance from km 46 on the Palliser Forest
Service Road.
The recreation site serves as a good base for driving, exploring
and hiking in the upper valleys of the Alberta and Palliser Rivers.
Fishing
Rainbow trout are present in both rivers. The Palliser is
silty during high water run-0ff (late June to early July).
