Cranbrook's Recreation Trails 

South Star X-C Ski Trails - # 1 - 25km 

A 25km trail with a variety of loop trails suitable for novice to advanced skiers. Also suitable for easy hiking, horseback riding and mountain biking. The trailhead is located at the south end of 38th Ave., off the Gold Creek Road in Cranbrook.

Cooper Lake (pdf, 96k) - #2 - 3km 

An easy trail to a subalpine lake. Trailhead is located on the left, at 16.8km on Lumberton Rd.

Richmond Lake (pdf, 57k) - #3 - 1.4km  

A short steep trail to a subalpine lake. The trailhead is on the left side of the switchback, just beyond the 32km road sign on the Perry Creek Road.

Gold Run Lake (pdf, 51k) - # 4 - 1km 

An easy hike to a subalpine. The trailhead is located on the north side of the creek 0.5km past the Richmond Lake trailhead.

Lisbon Lake (pdf, 86k) - # 5 - 2km

Short, easy hike to a small lake. Turn right a the 7km sign on the Perry Creek Road. Follow the road for 3.7km, keep to the left side of the canyon, then turn left onto a rough 4wd road. The trail head is 300m up the road.

Mallandaine Pass Trail (pdf, 156k) - # 6 - (2- 5km)  

Two routes to the top of the Mallandaine Pass. Old mining trail off the Mt. Evans trail or go from the top landing at the end of the Fiddler Creek Road. The Fiddler Creek Road is 13.8km on the Meachen Road.

Mount Evans (pdf, 150k) - # 7 - 6km  

A moderate Trail to an old mine in the subalpine. Turn left at 13.8km on the Meachen road, onto the Fiddler Creek Road. The trailhead is located on the left, at 1.2 km on the Fiddler Creek Road.

Mayo Ailsa Lake Trail (pdf, 149k) - # 8 - 1.5km 

An easy trail from the end of a logging road to two small lakes. Turn left at 17.4km on the Meachen Road, and continue to the trail head at the end of the logging road.

Hourglass Lake (pdf, 40k) - # 10 - 3.2km

Moderate hike to the first lake. Top lake can be reached by scrambling up the steep pitch beyond the first lake. The trailhead is located at 28.5km on the Meachen Road. A footbridge crosses the creek to the trail.

A moderate trail from Redding Creek to Baker Lake. The trail links with the Lockhart Creek Trail at Baker Lake Meadows

Hall Lake Trail - # 12 - 6km 

Moderately difficult 6km hike to an alpine like. A further scramble up a scree slope beyond the lake gives views of the Bull and Wildhorse River drainages. To reach the trail-head turn right at 19.2km on the Wildhorse road and go to the landing at the end of the road.

Alki Creek Trail (pdf, 124k) - # 13 - 10km  

 A moderate trail to an alpine basin. the trailhead is located off a skid road, at the top of a cutblock, just pass St. Mary's Lake.

Jurak Lake Trail - # 14 - 8km 

A difficult 8km trail to Jurak Lake from White Creek. May be used as access into St. Mary's Alpine Park.

Mount Stevens Trail (pdf, 85k) - # 15 - 13km

A moderate to difficult trail which starts on the road above lazy lake, and proceeds over Mt. Stevens to Nicol Creek. Turn left 5.6km up the Estella Mine Road, just before a creek, and follow this road for 250m to the trail head.

Bear Lake Trail (pdf, 91k) - # 16 - 2.5km

A short, moderate hike to an alpine lake. A further scramble up a scree slope beyond the lake gives views of the Bull and Wildhorse River drainages. To reach the trailhead, turn right at 19.2km on the Wildhorse Road and go to the landing at the end of the road.

Lakit Lookout Trail (pdf, 57k) - # 17 - 2km 

A moderate trail to an old lookout. The old lookout building is available for shelter. The trail head is reached by turning at the 7km sign on the Wildhorse Road, then following a rough 2WD road for 8km.

North Galbraith-Aldertree Trail - # 18 - 24km 

A 24km long trail through a valley bottom. Heavily used during hunting season.

Hornaday Pass Trail (pdf, 43k) - # 19 - 14km 

 A long historic trail up Norboe Creek and down Brule Creek. The trail is located at 75.5km on the Bull Creek Road.

Boivin Creek - # 20 - 7km 

A 7km trail that follows an old road bed up both forks of Boivin Creek from Elkford. This trail is managed in conjunction with the Elkford Nordic Ski Club.

Cummings Creek Trail - # 21 - 2km 

A 2km trail that starts at the edge of the Sparwood Ski Hill and transverses a wooded hillside to connect with the old road bed in the Cummins Creek drainage.

Mount Hosmer (pdf, 97k) - # 22 - 4.5km

A moderately difficult with 300 feet elevation gain and further hiking to the ridge. The trailhead is located at 7km on the Hartley Lake Road. The trail provides spectacular views.

Three Sisters (pdf, 113k) - # 23 9km  

Long hike through forest and into alpine areas with unusual karst topography and excellent views. Trailhead is located at 22km on the Hartley Pass Road. The first 3km is a muddy road.

Fairy Creek / Proctor Mtn Trail (pdf, 124k) - # 24 - 8km

Loop trail starts near the Fernie Tourist Info Centre and forks to the Fairy Creek and Mt. Proctor at the powerline. The Fairy Creek trail is a moderate hike at the base of Mt. Proctor through a varied forest setting (3km). The Mt. Proctor portion of the trail loop is a moderately difficult route with impressive views of the Elk Valley and the surrounding steep walled mountains.

Mount Fernie (pdf, 139k) - # 25 - 4km

A steady climb that accesses alpine ridge walks and loop trails. Exceptional views of the river valley below can be appreciated from a viewpoint at 3km. Close proximity to Fernie.

Hart Lake - # 26 - 1km

A short 1km trail to the lakeshore. The trail can be accessed from McLean Road in the Rosen Lake subdivision. 

Wigwam Lookout (pdf, 122k) - # 27 - 6km

An old road to an abandoned Forest Service Lookout. Good views of the Wigwam River valley. Must wade through Wigwam River at trailhead.

Snowshoe Lake trail - # 28 - 2km

A moderate 2km Trail to a small lake. Accessible when the Wigwam River is low enough to wade. 

Baldy Lake (pdf, 65k) - # 29 - 4.9km

Moderate hike to an alpine lake. Trailhead is located at 11.2km on the Phillips Creek Road.

Lost-Sunken Creek Trail - # 30 - 12km 

A moderate 12km trail to Sunken-Dibble Pass, where the trail forks to either Tanglefoot Lake or Cliff Lake. Good horse trail. The trail head is located at the base of the Steeples, east of Horseshoe Lake.

Horseshoe Basin Trail (pdf, 42k) - # 31 - 4.5km

A moderate trail to Sunken-Dibble Pass, where the trail forks to either Tanglefoot Lake or Cliff Lake. Good horse trail. The trail head is located at the base of the Steeples, east of Horseshoe Lake.

Mause Creek Trail (pdf, 142k) - # 32 - 4km

An easy trail up an inactive road to an old mine. Beyond the mine there is a moderately easy trail to Tarns Lake, then a moderate route over the ridge to Tanglefoot Lake. The trailhead begins at the parking area, just before the first creek crossing, at the 11km sign on the Mause Creek Road.

Mount Fisher (pdf, 138k) - # 33 - 4km

A steep difficult trail to the base of Mt. Fisher. The trailhead is located at the 8km sigh on the Mause Creek Road. No motorized use past trailhead.

Tanglefoot Lake Trail - # 34 - 3.6km

A moderate 3.6km trail through Windy Lake Pass and down to Cliff Lake

Mitchell Lake Trail (pdf, 154k) - # 35 - 1.2km

A short trail among an old skid trail to a lake attractive for fishing. The trailhead is located at 47.5km on the Van Creek FSR. Recommend high clearance vehicle.

Cliff Lake Trail (pdf 157k) - # 36 - 2km

An easy 1.5km trail from the Bull-Van Road to Lemon Lake the trail to Cliff Lake becomes very steep and difficult. The trailhead is located just beyond the 41km road sign on the Van Creek Road.

Lumberton Ski Trails - # 37 - 30km   

Approximately 30km. A series of cross-country ski trails utilizing unplowed logging roads and trails. The trail system is unmanaged in conjunction with the Kootenay Nordic Outdoor Club.

Moyie Snowmobile Trails - # 38 - 80km 

Approximately 80km. A system of snowmobile trails utilizing unplowed logging roads, inactive roads, powerline right of ways and trails. The trail system is managed in conjunction with the Cranbrook Snowmobile Club.
