Recreational Freshwater Fishing

Local rivers and streams offer excellent year-round angling opportunities.  Terrace is world famous for it's Chinook salmon (locally known as Spring salmon) fishing.  The Kalum River record weight for a Chinook is over 90 lbs., and it's not unusual to catch 40 to 60 lb. Chinook in the Skeena River.  A month by month breakdown follows.  Check regulations with the Fish and Wildlife Branch of the Ministry of Environment or with local fishing license vendors.

January-February

Spend a pleasant winter afternoon ice fishing on local lakes for trout.  Some rivers and streams are open to steelhead angling at this time of year.

March

Cutthroat trout runs on local streams provide excellent opportunities for fly fishing.

April

Fly fishing for steelhead and cutthroat trout are the anglers best bet this time of year.

May/June/July

Most anglers spend these months going after "The Big One".  There are still many opportunities for trout and char fishing.  Dolly Varden of 2 to 4 lbs. are not uncommon.

August

This is a transition month.  The Chinook runs are ending, sockeye and pink salmon are still in the rivers and the coho runs are just beginning.

September

Coho are the catch this month.  The local rivers supply an angler with fish from 5 to 15 lbs., the bugs are in retreat and the crisp, fresh mornings are a delight.

October

Mid-October generally is the end of coho fishing, but the Dolly Varden char and steelhead are available for the avid die-hards.

November/December

Small runs of steelhead are moving through the tributaries of the Nass and Skeena Rivers but to enhance your chances a guide or good source of local information is necessary to come home with a fish.

There are many local fishing lodges and guide/outfitters who will take you to the hot spots at any time of year. Check with the Chamber of Commerce, the Yellow Pages or local retailers for listings.  Bookings fill rapidly in the summer season so check well in advance.
