Tenures - Range

Range

Range(13) in the M-KMA, 2004 [RMZ-Stone Mountain].

Range is considered to be the second major resource managed by the Ministry of Forests. Range resources are allocated for use by the livestock industry through grazing and hay-cutting agreements. In order to manage the range resource according to the principles of integrated resource management, the range program considers the use by livestock with due consideration of the needs of wildlife, recreationalists, community water users and a variety of other demands on rangelands. Range resources are allocated through Animal Unit Months (AUMs) which is defined as "the amount of forage required for one month by an average animal of the genus Bos [cattle/cow], aged 6 months or older."

Specific responsibilities include responsibility for noxious weed control; administration of the range agreement system; range use planning; range practices under the Forest and Range Practices Act and range inventory standards.

The range program in the Fort Nelson Forest District is unique; the majority of the tenures let are for forage for horses to support various commercial back country or wilderness enterprises. Currently under tenure in Fort Nelson there are 10420 AUMs of which 9832 AUMs are identified as horses.
