Moose Lake - South.

The Ministry of Forests maintains a policy of consultation with First Nations.

Within the Fort Nelson Forest District there are eight First Nations groups that exercise traditional claims to the landbase. Most of these First Nations are covered under Treaty 8 and one under Treaty 11, as established with the federal government. The remainder are in treaty negotiations.

A summary of the current status (Fall 2006) of First Nations that have traditional claims in the Fort Nelson FD are:

  • Kaska Dena First Nations, currently in treaty negotiations:
    • Daylu Dena (Lower Post) First Nation;
    • Dease River First Nation; and
    • Tahltan First Nation.
  • Treaty 11 First Nations:
    • Fort Liard (North West Territories) First Nation - their tradional territory covers portions of the FNFD.
The Kaska Dena First Nations have traditional claims that extend into the Yukon Territory as well.
