Oil & Gas Activities

Drilling for gas northeast of Fort Nelson, February 2005!

Oil & gas activities in the Fort Nelson Forest District have a major impact on our forested land base. These activities include seismic exploration of crude oil and natural gas features on and under our land base. Also, there are sizeable pipeline networks and oil & gas processing facilities.

These impacts have great potential to impact the Timber Harvesting Land Base (THLB). Currently, there is considerable uncertainty as to just how much of the land base is impacted. For more information regarding possible impacts please refer to the TSR documents found on the Timber Supply Review district webpage.

Comparison of old seismic and new LIS seismic techniques, March 2005.

To the credit of the Oil & Gas industry, they have made some significant attempts at lessening the impact of their activities on the land base. One is to build ice bridges across S6 streams where there is normally no requirement. Secondly, is that industry has been pro-active in attempting new methods of establishing seismic lines, i.e. they are now much narrower than in the past and heavy equipment operators are asked to find a more natural path through the woods - not necessarily a straight line, called Low Impact Seismic (LIS). To the right is an example of newer seismic lines...
