The Campbell River Forest District has twenty-four Woodlot
Licences: 2 on the west coast, 1 on the mainland, 7 on Quadra Island with the
remainder on the East Coast of Vancouver Island between Sayward and Union Bay.
The first woodlots were awarded in the 1987 with more
recent awards occurring in the 1990’s through to the present day.
The areas selected to be in the Woodlot Licence program
tend to be located in urban interface areas of the East Coast of
Vancouver Island as the program provides for management to local
perspective, a light foot print, and offers many local people with jobs
and forest recreation opportunities. Licensees work with the
community, taking into consideration local values and objectives on
issues that include the protection of: scenic values, forest
ecosystems, watershed values and recreation features.
Harvesting operations can also provide a source of
revenue, supporting local priorities, while harvest rates and cut block
locations can be modified within the tenure to meet locally determined
objectives and interests.
There are 8,647 hectares of Crown Land and 1,455
hectares of private land in the woodlot licence program. The combined
Allowable Annual Cut (AAC) for the private and crown land in woodlot
licences in the district is 60,527 m3/year.
